The Trecena of Initiation We in the West get really excited about anything "new". New technologies, new friends, new jobs, new homes, new options on the menus of our favorite restaurants. And so you'd think a new Tzolk'in round would be reason for celebration throughout the Maya world. But it's not. For the Maya, time is cyclical, and so there is no beginning or end. The trecenas simply repeat, one following the other in an unending choreography of time. But the day signs do have meaning, and that is what matters even more than beginnings or endings. Imix is the Alligator, the initiator of new ideas and activities, a sign of radiant Eastern energy. He will rule the next thirteen days, and as his fresh essence percolates through your consciousness, don't worry too much about getting work done. In fact, the Maya themselves avoid any appreciable amount of activity, because for them, Imix is a challenging day, charged with reflecting the deep, visionary aspect of reality... not unlike, as author Ken Johnson describes it, Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious. And so, take this time to plan the next phase of your personal or professional journey, flesh out your vision, dreams and goals, and prepare for the time when you will need to take that first step. Mayan Elders to honor the Conscious Convergence We're thrilled to report that three well-known Maya elders, Don Alejandro Oxlaj, Don Rigoberto Itzep and Hunbatz Men, have agreed to participate in the Conscious Convergence event, to take place July 17-18, 2010. The three elders, among the most respected and well-known representatives of the Mayan people, will perform special ceremonies in Guatemala and Mexico to celebrate the Conscious Convergence. We're currently looking into the possibility of having the ceremonies documented through video or available for live streaming. The Trecena of Communication The eighteenth Trecena is governed by Ik’, the Wind. The Wind is the breath of spirit, of communication, of connection… indeed, of Life itself, for Life is the greatest communicator there is. To communicate is, in its most simple essence, to be connected. To be connected, in turn, does not necessarily mean spending your life on social networks or talking on the phone… it means to be actively present, in your mind body and soul, and to be aware of others, other living beings, the natural environment, your family and community, and of yourself. Communication may be verbal, visual, auditory, kinetic, sensual, emotional, psychic or spiritual. And so regardless of whether you think you are a good communicator or not, if you quiet those external communication tools that society and the marketing machines of our economy bombard us with on a daily basis, and tune into those finer, subtler frequencies, you may find yourself communicating on a much higher and deeper level. Ironically, Wind is as fickle as it is strong… it can change direction on a moment’s notice, but if you are aware and tuned in, you will notice those signs and hints of change that can be short-lived, ephemeral in fact, but tell of major shifts to come. This Trecena is not the time for control or rules. It is a time of fluidity, experimentation, and open-mindedness. One word: Eyjafjallajokull By now, most of us have heard the news about a previously little-talked-about volcano in Iceland called Eyjafjallajokull, a word that is nearly impossible to pronounce but one that is at the center of a major disruption of air traffic and all of its related consequences throughout the European region. When we asked how are people doing in those areas affected by the ash cloud that’s slowly wafting across Europe, the responses were almost equally split between an introspective look at how we relate to mother Earth and what the eruption means in terms of our evolution as a species. Some interpret this event as a sign of things to come in 2012, while others welcome the longed-for reprieve from air travel noise and pollution across their skies. One of our friends, Barbara Swoboda who runs the Mayan Calendar web site Indalosia in Germany, writes, Dear friends around the world, As yesterday the volcano in Iceland broke out for a second time, the cloud of it has reached Germany and my little village as well. It feels a little spooky, because it gives me the thought of what the Mayan Prophecies are telling us - 72 hours without sun. I think, it is like a ding-dong of the PreWave ahead … of the Conscious Convergence on 17-18 July 2010. For tomorrow (13 Imix), the weatherman is announcing sunny weather, time for grilling and cultural events and a really happy day. Tina Turner will give a Live Concert on rememberance of the CultTimes in music. So... we are celebrating the good-bye from past times... while moving into the celebration of a new level of Evolution into the 9th wave. And so, as we enter Earth Week here in the US, with Earth Day on April 22 (5 Cimi), perhaps we can all think about our relationship to the planet and its natural ecosystems that support not just ours, but ALL life this side of the galaxy. ..let us know what you think! The Trecena of Power Muluc, the Water sign, rules the seventeenth trecena of the Tzolk’in. The Trecena of Wisdom The sixteenth trecena of the Tzolk’in is ruled by Cib, the Owl. The Trecena of Potential The fifteenth trecena of the Sacred Tzolk’in is ruled by Akb’al. This is the realm of Night, of the great deep Void where nothing yet exists and all potential dwells. This is the place where all things begin, where all roads commence, where all thoughts germinate. Honor the sacred seed within your soul, sink into the profound, pregnant silence and release all earthly stresses, pressures and deadlines. For here, time has no sway. Here, all simply is and will be. Here, the core cells of nascent life of everything shimmer, bathed in an inner peace that has neither beginning nor end, holding within the possibility to become anything and to be everything. It is really a matter of choice, of acceptance, and of letting go. Choose which path you will follow, which direction in life to take, which aspects of your soul to let bloom. Accept those choices and the responsibilities that come therewith. Accept them fully and completely. Respect them and respect yourself. Finally, let go of toxic emotions, desires and attitudes that would fracture the path you have chosen to walk upon. John Payne's Mayan Calendar Story In the last issue of El Quetzal, we announced a series of personal stories from you, our readers. With this issue, we are delighted to present the first in this series, a short narrative from one of the most active members of our community, John Payne. Enjoy! My Mayan day sign is 4 Cib. 4 is the tone for Stability, the 4 directions of orientation—height, length, depth, and breadth; and Cib is the sun sign for Wisdom, the Owl. I pay specific attention to the direction of depth. Depth is the 4th dimension and level of consciousness of the Mayan Calendar. I consider that to be a highly visionary direction. My life and my thoughts are very visionary in plan and in practice. I try to look forward into the future and bring it back to today and plan my life in balance with what I have seen in the future. I look for the right path to follow to get me there with the guidance of my day sign—stability and the Owl. It has been 2-3 years that I have studied and followed the Mayan Calendar in depth. My understanding of the 4th dimension has allowed me so much more freedom in my thought processes. It has now given me a path in which to follow to find the 5th dimension and level of consciousness—my center point. It is my center point that has eluded me for some many years, and now that I have the Mayan Calendar to guide me I feel I will find this point very soon. I certainly strive to do that daily by practicing being a visionary. My day sign, and each daily energy sign, combine to show me the path. I find that the Mayan Calendar allows me to be very introspective, and understanding not only of myself but those around me, and those around them. The Trecena of Collaboration As we enter the fourteenth trecena, the trecena of Oc, the Dog, it is time to think of our extended family. Not just our biological family, but our human family. All of the people you come into regular contact with, at home, at work, in our social or community lives. What is your relationship with these individuals? Are your relationships fulfilling, supportive, loving, do they propel you—and the people in question—forward and upward, or do they hold you back, do they harbor anger, envy, resentment, insecurity, fear? Remember you always have a choice in life; and if you’re staying in a relationship out of need, fear, or simply because “there’s no one better,” you might think again. Collaboration is typically understood as an interconnected relationship with one or more people wherein all parties work or interact closely together for a positive aim or goal. But it doesn’t have to be work or a career, and it doesn’t have to have a specific goal. Collaboration can simply mean living a positive relationship. But that starts with YOU. Your collaborative relationships reflect where you are in your life, your outlook and attitude. And no matter where you are, you can make a choice to move forward—or backward. Why? Because you naturally attract or repel certain types of energies based on your personal evolution. If you are depressed, something inside wants to be happy but prefers to be down. If you are psychically strong and free of toxic emotions, you will simply not be able to coexist or collaborate with people who pull you down. The energies balance themselves out according to their own nature. There is no value judgment in the universe—only balance. And that requires emotional maturity, inner peace, and integration of the stronger, healthier qualities that make us human: loyalty, integrity, honor, love. That is the challenge of Oc. So tip the scales in your favor. Be a team player—first, with yourself. And that will naturally flow outward to the people in your life.
