Just a quick update of very relevant issues:

We appreciate all the volunteers that have stepped up to help and support the Conscious Convergence. We in deed are creating a wave of unity to fulfill our greater destiny!

2. Gulf of Mexico. We are developing a series of global concordances for the Gulf of Mexico crisis and its healing. We've had some internal planning and meditating about it and will announce the first Tele-Webcast and call later this week. Meanwhile, please share your ideas on the new discussion forum for this topic in the Discussion Forum, under "Event Discussions/Gulf of Mexico Healing":

Not firm yet, but most likely we'll initiate our global support program this Saturday June 5th with a Tele-Webcast-Concordance, then follow up with a much larger global concordance/Tele-Webcast on Sunday and Monday June 20 and 21, aligned with the solstice/equinox and a gathering of indigenous healers located in the Gulf on the 21st.

The Trecena of Initiation

We in the West get really excited about anything "new". New technologies, new friends, new jobs, new homes, new options on the menus of our favorite restaurants. And so you'd think a new Tzolk'in round would be reason for celebration throughout the Maya world. But it's not. For the Maya, time is cyclical, and so there is no beginning or end. The trecenas simply repeat, one following the other in an unending choreography of time. But the day signs do have meaning, and that is what matters even more than beginnings or endings.

Imix is the Alligator, the initiator of new ideas and activities, a sign of radiant Eastern energy. He will rule the next thirteen days, and as his fresh essence percolates through your consciousness, don't worry too much about getting work done. In fact, the Maya themselves avoid any appreciable amount of activity, because for them, Imix is a challenging day, charged with reflecting the deep, visionary aspect of reality... not unlike, as author Ken Johnson describes it, Carl Jung's concept of the collective unconscious.

And so, take this time to plan the next phase of your personal or professional journey, flesh out your vision, dreams and goals, and prepare for the time when you will need to take that first step. Many of you have posted your intentions on our Facebook page, ranging from personal stories to travel to protecting our natural world. We welcome and encourage more posts and shared intentions during this very special trecena.

Mayan Elders to honor the Conscious Convergence

We're thrilled to report that three well-known Maya elders, Don Alejandro Oxlaj, Don Rigoberto Itzep and Hunbatz Men, have agreed to participate in the Conscious Convergence event, to take place July 17-18, 2010. The three elders, among the most respected and well-known representatives of the Mayan people, will perform special ceremonies in Guatemala and Mexico to celebrate the Conscious Convergence. We're currently looking into the possibility of having the ceremonies documented through video or available for live streaming.

Today is 1 - Crocodile (Imix) Begins a New Tzolkin (260 day cycle)

Tzolkin Trecena Notes – 1 Imix (Crocodile/Waterlily)

Day 1 of the 260 Day Tzolkin

Gregorian Date: May 27, 2010

Year Bearer: 11 Manik

Trecenas are thirteen-day periods in the Tzolkin. Each Trecena starts with the Number 1, but with a different Day Glyph. As a wave of the Thirteen Heavens, the underlying energy is governed by the
First Day Glyph of the Trecena and influences all thirteen successive Day Glyphs. Being aware of the predominant energy of the First Day of the Trecena, we can align our intentions with that energy
and allow our goals to manifest.

This Trecena starts with 1 Imix (Crocodile/Alligator/Waterlily) – Beginning - Initiating new
possibilities and concepts – Receptivity and Trust, Earth Mother, Nourishment, Protection,
Primordial Ocean of Possibilities.

The Classic Maya believed that an earth monster or primordial Crocodile floated in the ocean of
the Underworld. He carried the Earth on his back, nourishing and protecting all life. Thus, Crocodile supplies humanity with the underlying primal feeling of our connection to nature and Mother Earth.
The glyph itself represents a Waterlily, a symbol of beauty, abundance and growth, and the
possibility of ascension out of the primordial soup of creation.

Out of the void, a spark of fire falls into the primordial ocean of possibilities and creation spirals into life.

With 1 Imix we are starting a new Tzolkin round of 260 days which ends on 13 Ahau. 1 Imix is a
logical place to begin counting the days. The number 1 and Imix both symbolize beginning.
According to Kenneth Johnson in Jaguar Wisdom, “this is an arbitrary point of origin. The rhythm
of the Sacred Calendar is circular; many contemporary Calendar shamans insist that it has neither beginning nor end. Nevertheless, we will follow tradition and use 1 Crocodile as a convenient ‘beginning’.”

Another representation of the Trecena is that of a creative wave beginning at 1 and ending at 13,
with the numbers 6, 7 and 8 representing the crest of the wave. The crest could be interpreted
as a strong influential energy, although the underlying influence on the Trecena would still rest
in the beginning. In this Trecena, the crest falls on 6 Cimi (Transformation/Death), 7 Manik (Deer/Healing Hand) and 8 Lamat (Rabbit/Venus). It is interesting that transformation, change
and new beginnings, falls on the crest of the wave in the trecena Crocodile which is the
beginning of the Tzolkin. Deer symbolizes groundedness of the four-legged animals and the
healing hand. Rabbit energy symbolizes abundance and the pure joy of being alive. The
energies of this Crest propel us to change in order to heal and live in abundance.

Very likely the Conscious Convergence will be observed also by many other elders all over the Mayan lands as the word goes around. The participation of Hunbatz Men and Don Alejandro takes on a special role in that it establishes a continuity to the Harmonic Convergence in 1987 in which they both played an instrumental role.

Tzolkin Notes – EVOLUTIONARY SHIFT 2011

ORIGIN OF THE TZOLKIN COUNT OF DAYS

Many have written and hypothesized about this but no definitive answer has appeared. Perhaps Tony Shearer in Beneath the Moon and Under the Sun says it best:
“A story was told to the Spaniards shortly after the conquest in Oaxaca ….

‘On the day we call Tecpotl (Etznab/Flint) a great light came from the Northeastern sky. It glowed for 4 days in the sky, then lowered itself to that rock (the rock can still be seen at Tenochtitlan de Valle in Oaxaca ). From the light there came a great, a very powerful being who stood on the very top of the rock and glowed like the sun in the sky.

There he stood for all to see, shining day and night. Then he spoke, his voice was like thunder, booming across the valley.

Our old men and women, the astronomers and astrologists, could understand them and he could understand them.

He (the Solar Beam) told us how to pray and fixed for us days of fast and days of feasting. He then balanced the “Book of days” (Sacred Calendar) and left, vowing that he would always watch down on us, his beloved people.’”

The Sacred Calendar, the Tzolkin, was created by combining the 20 sacred glyphs with
13 magic numbers. 13 x 20 = 260.

According to the Mesoamericans of Mexico and Central America , their total concept of life revolved around the Sacred Calendar and life was viewed as a great ceremony.
This ceremony continues today as we follow the Sacred Calendar and dance to the
rhythm of the cycles of the most Sacred Drum.

TZOLKIN MEASURES SACRED TIME

The Tzolkin Count of days measures sacred time. It is not based on the measure of the movement of the Earth around the Sun but rather the unique Sacred Energy created by each combination of 20 Day Glyphs and 13 Magic Numbers. These rounds or cycles of 260 days (kin) are endlessly repeating likened to the heartbeat of the Universe. As Dr. Carl Calleman so succinctly states in The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness: “The tzolkin is really a filtration pattern of divine light. This pattern exists in a realm beyond time, in the mind of God, as it were. The tzolkin by itself is thus a pattern for the unfolding of creative energy rather than a calendar.”

According to the Ancient Greeks, there are two types of time: Chronos and Kairos. Chronos is chronological or sequential time, a quantitative measurement. A good example is the Gregorian Calendar. Kairos is a qualitative measurement - the time in between or the time as the actual moment or the NOW. Kairos is the time when you honor the sacredness of the moment.

Staying in Kairos time and being aware of the day’s (Tzolkin) energy opens your reality
to synchronicities, miracles and magic.

Today is 13 Ahau, the 260^th day of this Tzolkin. Tomorrow, 1 Imix begins a new Tzolkin round. The energies surrounding 13 are holy – co-creation, unconditional love, and the culmination of spiritual enlightenment. Likewise are the energies surrounding Ahau – sun, flower, light lord, enlightenment, ascension, ancestor, unconditional love and awareness of co-creation. 13 Ahau feels like completion coupled with the feeling of powerful light energy moving creation forward.

UPCOMING DATES

On May 27, 2010 , 1 Imix, there will be only two more Tzolkin rounds
(260 days each = 520 days) before the evolutionary shift of October 28, 2011 .

Ends: 13 Ahau (Gregorian October 28, 2011 )

October 28, 2011 marks the completion date of the Nine Levels of Evolutionary Consciousness according to Dr. Calleman (www.calleman.com).

Humanity present now has chosen to be witnesses and participants in this Universal Shift
of Evolution. The promotion of fear and anxiety surrounding 2012 is the complete opposite of the emotions that we will be feeling. The evolutionary wave of completion will allow humanity to enter a Golden Age of unity, love and peace. We feel that the Sacred Calendar, Tzolkin Count of Days, will continue as a galactic constant and will
serve as a base for grounding as we explore our new awareness.

The end date of the Mayan calendar - again

Where does our understanding of the Mayan calendar begin, with a presumed "end date" or with a model for the evolution of consciousness? There still seems to be several researchers of the Mayan calendar who want to sacrifice all meaningful understanding of the Mayan calendar because they believe that the December 21, 2012 date is cut in stone. Yesterday, May 11, 2010 at the Yavapai County Administration offices in Prescott Arizona, Yavapai County held a hearing and filed a judgement against Adam DeArmon "Yellow Bird" to
cease his Inipi or Sweat Lodge practices at his home, take down his
sweat lodges and then suggested he request a permit from the county for
a permit to be valid only his own person use. Go to our site to read

On May 11, 2010, Yavapai County Development Services brought complaint against Adam Yellowbird DeArmon regarding the building and use of an Inipi, (Sweat Lodge). He was ordered not to use the Inipi and to dismantle the Inipi, a Military tent, and a large shade awning before July 13th or be fined $5,000. The judgment was that these were all buildings and that a building permit was not issued for any of them. Adam was ordered to formally request a building permit for the Inipi before constructing another one on this property.

International ecological camp „ECOTOPIA“
from the 1st to the 21st of August 2010 as guest in Wiesenburg
in the ‚Hohen Flaming’ 90 km from Berlin

The name „Ecotopia“ is composed from the english words for *ecology and utopia*.

It stands for an „intercultural gathering for sustainable living“, that has
taken place since 20 years in changing european countries. For example in
Turkey in 2008 and 2007 in Portugal. Very typically this gathering draws
young environmental activists from east and west. This year for the first
time it is open for all generations.

Ecotopia keeps on being a functional model of a self sustaining community,
in which the principles of an ecologically sound lifestyle *are* being
practiced for three weeks. (waste avoidance and -recycling,
vegetarian/veganfoo d, use of alternative
energies ... )

People from different countries and cultures with a concern to questions of
environmental or social justice meet at Ecotopia. One gets to know each
other and develops friendships while working, learning, talking, playing and
during the celebrations. Ecotopia is a place for exchange of experiences and
spreading of information. About 1000 people are expected during the three
weeks.

Everything that in the broadest sense has to do with ecology will be dealt
with in workshops, seminars, speeches, movies, art, theatre und musical
actions.

We are foreseing workshops building compost toilets and and solar showers,
preparing the use of the internet and websites, drumming-, singing- and
theatre workshops as well as 1-2 movie nights with movies on ecological
topics from all of Europe, with lectures and rounds of talks on climate
change, traffic, food, ecological building and economy, exchange of
experiences with campaigns, alternatives medias, racism and
xenophobia, investigation of the specific ecological features of the region……

The Eco, a private currency, which has a calculation rate depending on a
persons income, will allow people and families with low salaries to
also participate.

There is not a fixed daily structure on the camp. With their registration
the participants can announce any offers ahead of time. The actual program
will develop at the camp through and by the interests and initiatives of all
the people envolved. Everyone partakes on all the jobs needing to be done.

A central kitchen cooks for the whole camp. Contracts with biological
farmers of the region to provide the camp with food were being made,
spending over a 20.000 Euros.

Since the towncouncil of Wiesenburg decided in the summer of 2009, that
Ecotopia could be held in Wiesenburg close to the trainstation, the
preparations on local and international levels are boosting.

On an international level it is possible to draw from already existing
experiences and contacts. A big part of the public relation task is done by
way of the internet. An advertising postcard has been distributed at the
climate conference in Copenhagen. Many of the organisations and initiatives
from Europe took cards along to spread them back home in their countries.

A growing number of people out of the region are joining the group
responsible for the camp. It is also the group and the place to work on
organisational structures of public relations and with the actual
preparations for the camp.

In the long term the perspective is to install a lasting ecological camping
site on the camp ground. The use of this place makes also sense thinking of
the german ‘Wandertag’ (hiking day) which will take place in 2012 in the
region of our ‘Hoher Flaming’.

The Trecena of Communication

The eighteenth Trecena is governed by Ik’, the Wind. The Wind is the breath of spirit, of communication, of connection… indeed, of Life itself, for Life is the greatest communicator there is.

To communicate is, in its most simple essence, to be connected. To be connected, in turn, does not necessarily mean spending your life on social networks or talking on the phone… it means to be actively present, in your mind body and soul, and to be aware of others, other living beings, the natural environment, your family and community, and of yourself. Communication may be verbal, visual, auditory, kinetic, sensual, emotional, psychic or spiritual.

And so regardless of whether you think you are a good communicator or not, if you quiet those external communication tools that society and the marketing machines of our economy bombard us with on a daily basis, and tune into those finer, subtler frequencies, you may find yourself communicating on a much higher and deeper level.

Ironically, Wind is as fickle as it is strong… it can change direction on a moment’s notice, but if you are aware and tuned in, you will notice those signs and hints of change that can be short-lived, ephemeral in fact, but tell of major shifts to come.

This Trecena is not the time for control or rules. It is a time of fluidity, experimentation, and open-mindedness. Indeed, if you are one with the Wind, you will experience a different kind of freedom!

One word: Eyjafjallajokull

By now, most of us have heard the news about a previously little-talked-about volcano in Iceland called Eyjafjallajokull, a word that is nearly impossible to pronounce but one that is at the center of a major disruption of air traffic and all of its related consequences throughout the European region.

When we asked how are people doing in those areas affected by the ash cloud that’s slowly wafting across Europe, the responses were almost equally split between an introspective look at how we relate to mother Earth and what the eruption means in terms of our evolution as a species.

Some interpret this event as a sign of things to come in 2012, while others welcome the longed-for reprieve from air travel noise and pollution across their skies. One of our friends, Barbara Swoboda who runs the Mayan Calendar web site Indalosia in Germany, writes,

Dear friends around the world,

As yesterday the volcano in Iceland broke out for a second time, the cloud of it has reached Germany and my little village as well. It feels a little spooky, because it gives me the thought of what the Mayan Prophecies are telling us - 72 hours without sun. I think, it is like a ding-dong of the PreWave ahead … of the Conscious Convergence on 17-18 July 2010. For tomorrow (13 Imix), the weatherman is announcing sunny weather, time for grilling and cultural events and a really happy day. Tina Turner will give a Live Concert on rememberance of the CultTimes in music. So... we are celebrating the good-bye from past times... while moving into the celebration of a new level of Evolution into the 9th wave.

And so, as we enter Earth Week here in the US, with Earth Day on April 22 (5 Cimi), perhaps we can all think about our relationship to the planet and its natural ecosystems that support not just ours, but ALL life this side of the galaxy.

Conscious Convergence July 17–18, 2010

Kenneth Johnson's Mayan Calendar Story

Our next "Mayan Calendar Story" comes from author and Mayan scholar Kenneth Johnson, who spent winter 2009/2010 traveling the Maya lands of Guatemala and Mexico. In this story, posted on our site as a blog, Ken recounts what it's like not just to follow the changing signs of the Tzolk'in, but quite literally to live the calendar, from sunrise to sunset, with the Maya themselves. It certainly makes you want to take a month off from your job...

Pre-Columbian Peace Prophecy

As the world stands on the brink of all-out earth changes, this summer Indigenous leaders and Tribal Elders from throughout the Americas will make the long journey to Grain Valley Missouri for a special summit to fulfill their people's Pre-Colombian peace prophecy.

The Trecena of Wisdom

The sixteenth trecena of the Tzolk’in is ruled by Cib, the Owl. New Online Mayan Calendar Class

It is rare that there are archeological discoveries that truly rewrite
history, but I think the 11,000 years old one in Göbekli Tepe does:

It also seems as if this discovery in the nick of time sheds some extra light on the Conscious Convergence that may help to put this coming event in perspective.

For all those that have read The Purposeful Universe and seen how the Golden Ratio is generated by the Tree of Life it should also be clear that what we see here is the world's oldest known man-made representation of the Golden Ratio. From the broader perspective of the Mayan calendar this may seem like a curiosity, but it also adds to a picture that makes sense any way you slice it.

The Trecena of Potential

The fifteenth trecena of the Sacred Tzolk’in is ruled by Akb’al. This is the realm of Night, of the great deep Void where nothing yet exists and all potential dwells. This is the place where all things begin, where all roads commence, where all thoughts germinate.

Honor the sacred seed within your soul, sink into the profound, pregnant silence and release all earthly stresses, pressures and deadlines. For here, time has no sway. Here, all simply is and will be. Here, the core cells of nascent life of everything shimmer, bathed in an inner peace that has neither beginning nor end, holding within the possibility to become anything and to be everything.

It is really a matter of choice, of acceptance, and of letting go. Choose which path you will follow, which direction in life to take, which aspects of your soul to let bloom. Accept those choices and the responsibilities that come therewith. Accept them fully and completely. Respect them and respect yourself.

Finally, let go of toxic emotions, desires and attitudes that would fracture the path you have chosen to walk upon. Remember that fulfilling your potential is both the toughest and the simplest thing you’ll ever do.

John Payne's Mayan Calendar Story

In the last issue of El Quetzal, we announced a series of personal stories from you, our readers. With this issue, we are delighted to present the first in this series, a short narrative from one of the most active members of our community, John Payne. Enjoy!

My Mayan day sign is 4 Cib. 4 is the tone for Stability, the 4 directions of orientation—height, length, depth, and breadth; and Cib is the sun sign for Wisdom, the Owl.

I pay specific attention to the direction of depth. Depth is the 4th dimension and level of consciousness of the Mayan Calendar. I consider that to be a highly visionary direction. My life and my thoughts are very visionary in plan and in practice. I try to look forward into the future and bring it back to today and plan my life in balance with what I have seen in the future. I look for the right path to follow to get me there with the guidance of my day sign—stability and the Owl.

It has been 2-3 years that I have studied and followed the Mayan Calendar in depth. My understanding of the 4th dimension has allowed me so much more freedom in my thought processes. It has now given me a path in which to follow to find the 5th dimension and level of consciousness—my center point. It is my center point that has eluded me for some many years, and now that I have the Mayan Calendar to guide me I feel I will find this point very soon. I certainly strive to do that daily by practicing being a visionary. My day sign, and each daily energy sign, combine to show me the path.

I find that the Mayan Calendar allows me to be very introspective, and understanding not only of myself but those around me, and those around them. My communication levels have increased substantially and substantively, and with great humility, with everyone.

The Trecena of Collaboration

As we enter the fourteenth trecena, the trecena of Oc, the Dog, it is time to think of our extended family. Not just our biological family, but our human family. All of the people you come into regular contact with, at home, at work, in our social or community lives. What is your relationship with these individuals? Are your relationships fulfilling, supportive, loving, do they propel you—and the people in question—forward and upward, or do they hold you back, do they harbor anger, envy, resentment, insecurity, fear? Remember you always have a choice in life; and if you’re staying in a relationship out of need, fear, or simply because “there’s no one better,” you might think again.

Collaboration is typically understood as an interconnected relationship with one or more people wherein all parties work or interact closely together for a positive aim or goal. But it doesn’t have to be work or a career, and it doesn’t have to have a specific goal. Collaboration can simply mean living a positive relationship. But that starts with YOU. Your collaborative relationships reflect where you are in your life, your outlook and attitude. And no matter where you are, you can make a choice to move forward—or backward.

Why? Because you naturally attract or repel certain types of energies based on your personal evolution. If you are depressed, something inside wants to be happy but prefers to be down. If you are psychically strong and free of toxic emotions, you will simply not be able to coexist or collaborate with people who pull you down. The energies balance themselves out according to their own nature. There is no value judgment in the universe—only balance. And that requires emotional maturity, inner peace, and integration of the stronger, healthier qualities that make us human: loyalty, integrity, honor, love. That is the challenge of Oc.

So tip the scales in your favor. Be a team player—first, with yourself. And that will naturally flow outward to the people in your life.

Over the past several months, author and Mayan scholar Kenneth Johnson has been traveling the lands of the Maya, in Guatemala and Mexico. Invited by special permission to attend the celebration of 8 B'atz' (8 Chuen in Yucatec) in Momostenango, the most elaborate Mayan Calendar ceremony in Guatemala, Ken gives us an intimate view into the initiation rites of a Mayan Daykeeper in his latest blog, "Initiation of a Daykeeper: A Report from Momostenango".

Momostenango, Guatemala, is renowned for its strict adherence to the Mayan Calendar. This is where, Ken tells us, Dennis and Barbara Tedlock spent several years when Dennis did his translation of the Popol Vuh and Barbara wrote her now-famous "Time and the Highland Maya". We are thrilled to have Ken's account of this sacred rite submitted directly from Guatemala, and hope you enjoy it!

And so, starting now, we will publish one personal Mayan Calendar story per newsletter. This can be a story about any aspect of life, and the role that the Tzolk’in plays therein. You can talk about a revelation or an unusual change you experienced, or simply the everyday, the practical, the way that you experience the sun signs, or the questions and doubts you have.

These stories will be similar to the “My Mayan Calendar Story” published on the Portal site, but in a much more condensed form. Here are the basic requirements: the limit is 250 words; the stories should be in good English (please check for spelling and grammar) and should have a single, focused point. To submit your story, please simply email it to us.

Each trecena, we will choose one story among the pool of stories we receive, and publish it in El Quetzal, along with your name, city and country.
